Sustainability is a much-discussed topic of our time and within the travel industry “sustainable travel” has been on the rise for many years. Aside from current corona restrictions, consumers love to see the world, but are they concerned about their environmental impact when travelling? Newly conducted survey insights collected by Travellyze reveal that the Nordics travelers do consider environmental concerns and sustainability, when travelling.
Tourism is one of the world’s fastest growing industries and sustainable travel refers to maintaining long-term tourism without harming natural and cultural environments. Many might want to support sustainable tourism if they are asked, but is this also the case when the wanderlust occurs, and the yearly holiday planning is at hand?
Related has been collecting data about the Nordic outbound travel market since 2014, and we have recently developed our own unique market leading travel intelligence concept called Travellyze, which provides us with the latest insights on sustainable travel – and much more.
Environmental concerns and sustainability
When asked about to what extent environmental concerns and sustainability are of importance when travelling, the data reveals that no less than 60% of the Nordic travelers think that it is important for them when travelling. When comparing the 4 Nordic countries, it is also evident that Swedish travelers are those most concerned with this issue, as a total of 76.9% Swedish respondents think environmental concerns and sustainability are important factors, when choosing holiday destinations. Among Danes, the number is the lowest, with 58.7% of the Danish respondents saying that environmental concerns and sustainability are important. For Norwegians and Fins, the numbers are respectively 61.5% and 70%.
Climate compensated options
The survey also asked to what extent climate compensated/low carbon emission options at hotels and flights are of importance. The collected data reveals that of 46.4% of all Nordic travelers think that this is important. When comparing the 4 Nordic countries, the data again clearly shows that Swedish travelers are those most concerned with climate compensated/low carbon emission options at the holiday destination, as a total of 57.9% of the Swedish respondents think this is important, followed by Norwegians where 54.4% find it important. In line with above insights only 37.4% of the Danish respondents think having climate compensated/low carbon emission options is important. For Fins, 47.5% find it important.
