There are several different ways to book a travel, and this has partly been facilitated by the technological development. Some travelers prefer booking a package trip at a travel agency website, while others prefer using price comparison sites. But what are the most popular choices and is there a difference between e.g. families and couples? Newly conducted survey insights collected by Travellyze reveal that booking flights and hotels separately is most popular and that having children make a difference in booking preferences.
Related has been collecting data about the Nordic outbound travel market since 2014, and we have recently developed our own unique market-leading travel intelligence concept called Travellyze, which provides us with the latest insights on booking preferences – and much more.
Top booking preferences
The data reveals that 27.11% of all Nordic travelers prefer booking flights and hotel separately online via different booking portals or travel agencies – this constitutes the top preference among Nordic travelers. In second place, 26.32% of all Nordic travelers prefer booking a package trip at a travel agency website, and the least preferred option among the surveyed travelers is booking a package trip with a travel agent in person or via phone/e-mail. When comparing the four Nordic countries, it is evident that Danish, Swedish, and Finnish travelers especially prefer the second option, booking a package trip online at a travel agency website, and that Norwegian travelers to a higher extent prefer booking flights and hotels separately.
Families with children vs couples with no children
When looking further into the demographics of the travelers, the data reveals that families with children switch the above-mentioned order, as the majority, consisting of 29.31%, prefer booking a package trip online at a travel agency website rather than booking flight and hotel separately. This result may be explained by its level of convenience for families with children, which is also emphasized when comparing with couples with no children. Among such couples, the top preference is interestingly the exact opposite of above, as the majority of couples with no children, where 29.72% prefer booking separate flights and hotels online via different booking portals or travel agencies.
The least preferred option among both families with children and couples with no children aligns with the above-mentioned result and concerns booking a package trip with a travel agent in person or via phone/e-mail.
What about singles?
Recently, it has become increasingly popular traveling alone, and interestingly, price comparison sites as Momondo or Trivago are the most popular option among singles (26.42%), followed by booking separate flight and hotel online via different booking portals or travel agencies (24.6%). This suggests that singles have more available time for researching different options.
